The 2020s are a strange period to live through. The digital innovations of the past few years, namely the ever-increasing presence of recommendation algorithms and the rise of generative AI, are shaking up our information environment in ways that can be hard to comprehend. I am wary of following the path of least resistance when adapting to this new reality. I don't want to come off as a curmudgeon or a doomsday prepper here; I think these developments have the potential to improve our lives dramatically down the line, should we mold them and adapt them to do so. But for right now, big tech companies want to push boundaries and break things, and it looks like it's going to be a while before anyone figures out a way to effectively stop them. In this moment I think we can all benefit from disconnecting, slowing down, and refocusing.
